The Nestori Nature Reserve
A 181-hectare
nature reserve was established on water areas purchased by the Foundation.
The nature reserve is the first privately-owned protected area for
Saimaa Ringed Seal conservation. The Nestori Nature Reserve is situated
in the vicinity of Linnansaari National Park in the northern part
of the town of Savonlinna in eastern Finland. The purpose of the
nature reserve is to safeguard the habitat of the Saimaa Ringed
Seal. It is forbidden to use such methods of fishing that are harmful
to the Saimaa Ringed Seal, such as net fishing, and it is not allowed
to move in the vicinity of the shores and islets when and where
the seals are nesting.
